in an emerging wine appellation near the californian city of paso robles, aidlin darling design has embraced the region’s agricultural vernacular to remodel the brecon estate winery. the project involved overhauling the existing building, and reorganizing its production facilities and tasting rooms — which previously had little relationship to the surrounding context.

consequently, the design team set out to return the building to its original pragmatic simplicity. faux-historic decoration was stripped away and replaced with earthen plaster and an untreated cedar rain screen — naturally weathering materials that will age gracefully. the renovated building is also intended to reflect the agrarian structures found along california’s central coast.

the project involved overhauling the existing building, and reorganizing its tasting areas

the approach to the building’s tasting area has been reorganized, reconnecting visitors physically and experientially to the landscape and the adjacent vineyards. centered around a majestic oak tree, the tasting area connects indoor and outdoor space, and comprises a large cantilevered deck, large pocketing doors, and a tasting bar positioned as a hinge between internal and external space. future plans call for a new subterranean production facility and tasting area nearby.
