designed by israel-based maor aharon, ‘matter of motion’ is an experiment in the relationship between materials, motion, and shape. it focuses on centrifugal motion and examines how different parameters such as velocity, acceleration, and radius of rotation affect different materials. the project was motivated by two main guidelines: first, to create new aesthetic characteristics that represent the concepts of freezing the moment, control vs. freedom, and the memory of production processes. second, to be a ‘one-man production line.’

these ideas generated the development of a new technique for casting various materials using centrifugal force, and to design, develop and build original tools and machinery for an independent production line with the capacity to manufacture small and medium-sized series of products. the first products manufactured in this process was a series of stools made of polymer resins that highlights the capabilities of the technique, such as combining different materials (wood and metal inserts) during the casting, showing multiple colors in a single object, and combining soft and hard materials together. all the stools were manufactured from the same reusable mold.

the design guideline is that a simple shape can hold and convey complex content (different materials, colors, multiple concepts, etc.) As is true regarding the loaf cake pan, the most basic mold for cake baking, the content is more important than the form. ‘matter of motion’ is one basic mold for ten different stools, each with unique ingredients, flavors, and colors. the distinctive pattern of each stool makes it a ‘one off’ piece.

‘matter of motion’ will be part of the ‘yes&…’ exhibition (israeli pavilion) at the XXI triennale di milano – ‘21st century. design after design’ 2 april – 12 september 2016.
