in rotterdam, dutch practice studio AAAN has completed the interior design of a wine store that consists of four distinct areas. named wijn aan de kade — or ‘wine on the quay’ — the scheme is located on the ground floor of a large existing building that dates back to 1896. as the former shipyard structure had fallen into disrepair, it was decided to restore the building’s exterior and create a contemporary shop and restaurant within the renovated property.

the 200 square meter store consists of four different zones. the main shopping area is found at ground level, while a mezzanine floor houses a kitchen alongside a bar at the rear of the plan. above, stairs lead to a designated wine tasting area, which adjoins an office and washroom facilities. stairs lead down from the main shopping area to subterranean wine cellar — a dimly lit room that stocks a range of exclusive wine collections.

the design is delineated by two wall units that run on different levels — visually connecting the ground floor, the mezzanine, and the first storey. throughout the scheme, these cabinets are clad with oak panels, which have been laser engraved with the labels of famous wine houses. a new skylight and several carefully positioned voids lend the project a sense of spatial fluidity, while all necessary amenities have been positioned in response to their functional requirements.
