modourbano aligns P17 apartment building with milan’s urban fabric

italian architecture practice modourbano has completed a residential housing complex in its home city of milan. named ‘P17’, the project sits centrally within the city’s existing fabric, reflecting the layout and façade orientation of the previously demolished structure. the scheme seeks to interact with a broader spatial and cultural context, embracing the milanese tradition of the 20th century with an original urban intervention. consequently, the contemporary building reflects a style that emerged in the wake of world war II and the economic boom of the 1960s.

the building’s appearance is partially defined by the particular shape of the corner plot, where two roads meet at a sharp angle. ‘P17’ has been designed to rebuild the urban fabric, harmonizing its height with that of the surrounding landscape. rational street elevations are characterized by sandstone façades, punctuated with a geometric fenestration. furthermore, cantilevered loggias serve as an interruption of the structural volume, lending the scheme a dynamic, yet sober appearance.

the building is aligned with the two passing streets, a configuration that creates an uncovered atrium, common to many of milan’s apartment buildings. this typology is characterized by long terraced balconies overlooking the courtyard below. painted with colored plaster, courtyard elevations are characterized by wide terraces throughout the building, known as ‘ringhiere’.

the layout and façade orientation of the previously demolished structure have been retained
