based in paris, sane architecture combines notions of nature and russian culture in their proposal ‘nizhniye mnevniki metro station’ for the international moscow metro competition. using the matryoshka doll’s underlying theme — complex entities understood through simple forms — as a formal guide, the concept uses repetition to create a large system made of easily digestible parts.

the interior is organized as a series of giant spheres that create all required spaces. access is made through two, 36m diameter spheres, which link platforms to vestibule areas. once inside, the second half of the concept becomes accessible: nature. a symbol of the city as an ecosystem, the project features grand graphic renditions of an abstracted landscape. as one travels through the station, a duality manifests between notions of the man made and mother earth. the ‘nizhniye mnevniki metro’ proposal was shortlisted for the competition.
