in the outskirts of randfontein, a gold mining city in south africa just west of johannesburg, local artist r1 has transformed an abandoned farm house into an eye-catching outdoor artwork. ‘sound of light’ comprises 1000 CDs pinned to the façade of a derelict roadside structure, turning the wooden dwelling into a glistening landmark. the installation has been strategically situated facing west in an open landscape, in order to best capture the sunlight as it redirects a spectrum of dynamic, neon-like hues onto its surroundings. completed in one day and dismantled the day after, the ephemeral artwork transforms as the viewer moves around it, mirroring varied, vibrant rays that change color as the sun alters its course from dawn till dark.

‘I consider the street as an open canvas,’ the artist says of his work. ‘I work with urban interventions and collect every day found materials, transforming them and placing them back where they came from, to become a part of the city’s journey. the resulting artwork is tactile, moving within the motion of the cityscape.  like the street, the work finds its meaning once an interaction with the passer-by takes place.’
