abin design studio creates pavilion of canopies for festival in india

the ‘pavilion of canopies’ was created by india-based abin design studio for a religious festival in west kolkata. the idea behind the design was to celebrate tribal life, rituals, and the symbiotic relationship with nature often held amongst the groups. an abstracted journey through lush forest canopies await guests, and ends with a promised ‘sight of glorious divinity’.

to construct the installation, a mandala-like plan of 19 discs, each measuring 10” in diameter, was laid out in a 60’ø circle. the lot was then raised to a height of twenty feet with support from a structure of composite bamboo posts. 38 planes of undulating fabric were then draped across the entirety of the pavilion.
