two years of research and development is given physical form in london-based designer marcin rusak’s ‘flora collection’. the small series of bespoke furnishings utilizes flowers and their natural characteristics to form durable, valuable pieces that engage rusak’s dual interests of botanical aesthetics and material significance.

project development led to two main techniques: flora perma and flora temporaria. the first, as one might expect is stable, and everlasting. the latter will evolve and transform visually over time, without losing structural integrity. both avenues represent different viewpoints on the relationship between humans and the natural world.

flower petals ‘frozen’ in resin create natural veins reminiscent of stone or fossil

in flora perma, decoration comes directly from nature itself. flowers are ‘frozen’ then machined. the result is a highly complex, intricate beauty composed of spontaneous cross sections and petal curves. in contrast to the black resin they’re held in, they appear as veins or fossils, giving the objects a stone-line quality.

flora temporaria presents floral elements as interpreted by the human hand. discarded flowers and clippings are processed and treated, then cast — like flora perma — in a dark resin mixture. the result is painterly, posed, and in comparison to the other technique, emotive. the ‘flora collection’ (lamp, table, partition screen) was presented in the future heritage exhibition at decorex 2015.
