TOP 10 bar and restaurant interiors

in many cases, the restaurant space is what draws people to visit and experience the food and drink the establishment has to offer. this year, a host of diverse restaurant and bar interiors have been realized in a number of locations around the world. as eateries continue to translate their menu into appealing and distinctive interiors; architects, designers and even a director have applied their ideas and imagination to create an atmosphere that tells a story of the culinary experience. from industrial settings to more playful spaces, we’ve compiled a list of ten bar and restaurant interiors that stood out in 2015.

earlier this year, canadian studio partisans completed the interior renovation of a bar in toronto, designed to rival the art nouveau histories of barcelona’s famed pinxto bars. located at the heart of the city’s little italy district, bar raval is the outpost of one of the world’s most celebrated mixologists. the sculpted mahogany wood uses the most dynamic, state of the art technologies and systems in the industry, creating a fluid stage for some of canada’s best culinary and mixology masters to perform their art.

‘the design developed out of a connection between the formal histories of art nouveau, the plethora of cured slabs of meat, and the anatomy of the chefs themselves: a tattooed muscle bound group of intellectuals’, explains partisans. ‘our design is a three dimensional tattoo manifest in pure CNC’d mahogany.’

adorned with a rainbow assortment of cables on the walls to the seating, kengo kuma and associates completed a restaurant and bar located in kichijoji, a suburban town outside of tokyo. the small venue is located on harmonica yokochi, a by-street that still retains the atmosphere of black-market stalls popular during the post-world war II period.

the project predominantly uses recycled materials, including ethernet cables, to give the restaurant its distinctive textured appearance. meanwhile, left-over melted acrylic byproducts have been used to furnish the bar, allowing the form of the space to become invisible with stools and tables appearing to float independently.

herzog & de meuron’s chäserrugg gipfelrestaurant sits high on the top of switzerland’s chäserrugg mountain. the humble wooden structure is situated within a ski resort in the toggenburg region amongst the unspoiled landscape, at an altitude of approximately 2260 metres. presenting pristine views, the timber-wrapped interiors feature one long running communal dining table lined with konstantin grcic’s ‘B chair’ which is easily stacked away when not needed.

set within a historical sawmill, the restaurant and cocktail bar carlo e camilla in segheria, milan opened earlier this year. together with her father, tanja solci restored the factory from its previous post-war state to house the fine-dining space established by italy’s celebrity chef carlo cracco. fusing italian culture into the choice of decor and tableware, a story is told through the setting. the brick walls and the aged concrete walls have been left exposed, adding to the overall industrial feel to the interior, while intimacy and sharing is highlighted by the use of two intercepting, communal tables placed at the center.

RAW restaurant by weijenberg

merging gastronomy with design led to the creation of RAW restaurant located in taipei. the interior collaboration was created by singapore-based studio weijenberg and the restaurant owner and chef- andré chiang. the interior space is accentuated by the sculptural timber structure which softly weaves and curves itself through the eatery. integrating as seating, surfaces, the bar counter and a general decorative element, it creates a journey and subtle transition from the bustling city streets into the distinctive establishment.

PNY restaurant by cut architectures

the interiors of PNY– a burger restaurant located in the marais neighborhood in paris was designed by cut architectures. a pastel pink and turquoise color scheme seen in the lacquered steel and mesh tubular constructions form the booth-like seating. drawing influence from beach huts mixed in with american diners, the subtropical theme is highlighted by the cacti plants, reflective surfaces and neon lights that bindswell with the youthful and busy atmosphere of the parisian district.

olga nur restaurant by arquitetos associados

in belo horizonte, brazilian practice arquitetos associados has completed the interior design of ‘olga nur’ — a restaurant in the city’s lourdes district. the project is defined by its distinctive ceiling, where almost 80,000 dowels are suspended from the roof canopy. cut to different lengths, the wooden rods create an inverted wave-like topography, establishing diverse perceptions of space.

pasticceria marchesi by roberto baciocchi

established as one of milan’s longest running producer of fine pastries and desserts, pasticceria marchesi opened a new location in the city by architect roberto baciocchi. owned by fashion house prada, an old-age allure combined with contemporary form the new, larger setting. opulent finishes such as mint marble walls mark the entryway whilst a central bar is framed in cherry wood with a background of classic aperitifs allow guests to sit and and soak in the atmosphere while, enjoying the baked pastries on marble table tops complemented with velvet seating.

kinfolk studios by berg design

in brooklyn’s williamsburg neighborhood, this bar space is articulated around the shell of a geodesic dome. designed for kinfolk – a multidisciplinary design studio – the timber structure divides the former car garage into three separate volumes; a retail space adjacent to the street front, the bar inside the dome and a large event space at the rear of the building. creating a comfortable and intimate setting, the timber canopy forms an array of seating arrangements.

known for the distinctive, visual style seen consistently in his film-making, american director wes anderson tried his hand at interior design for fondazione prada’s ‘bar luce’ which opened earlier this year in milan. translating his whimsical, and kitch style into a playful setting; sherbet colored formica furniture, juke boxes and pinball machines highlight the casual setting which has been imagined as a place where he could comfortably write a movie and spend his ‘non-fictional afternoons’ at.
