swedish architecture studio tham & videgård has completed a new school of architecture building for stockholm’s royal institute of technology (KTH). inserted into an existing courtyard, the structure is clad with a corten steel exterior that relates to the adjacent early twentieth century brick surroundings.

based on a layout that encourages movement across the campus, the scheme seeks to accommodate and encourage circulation both in and around the building. with its rounded contours, the six-storey scheme includes a sunken garden and roof terrace, while cultivating the character of the courtyard as one continuous space.

the interior is designed to be robust and flexible. curving walls create a free flow of contiguous space that enhances a sense of openness rather than enclosure. ‘views and paths are extended through the structure with spatial conditions more akin to a landscape than a traditional institutional building,’ explain the architects.

at ground level a series of double height spaces — the atelier and exhibition area — designate a generous main entrance that also doubles as an open lecture hall. deep floor plans mean that extensive glazing is used throughout the design, bringing vast amounts of light and transparency inside the building.
