working alongside justkid’s curator charlotte dutoit, life is beautiful — a music and art festival — has initiated the urban renewal of downtown las vegas. the neighborhood has progressively expanded with malka architecture selected to integrate street-style furniture alongside outdoor installations by bansky and d*face. the design team sought to create a series of public spaces, providing the opportunity for spontaneous meeting and interaction.

the scheme is part of an urban renewal project taking place in downtown las vegas

the design employs stacked green pallets, laid out in familiar geometrical forms. the first ‘arena’ comprises three embedded circles that are shifted within the same footprint — allowing for a variety of uses and seating positions. the scheme’s staggered nature means that individual surfaces double as stairs or backrests. the upper seats provide multiple views towards the city core, while lower areas connect directly to the inner center of the circle where daily performances take place.

elsewhere, three triangular structures have been positioned so that the voids between them can also be occupied. again, painted green pallets have been used, appearing as a natural extension of the surrounding lawn. the range of levels produced provides for both large groups in shared discussion, and secluded areas for more intimate company. the rawness of the material creates a visceral familiarity, reducing the distance between the user and the artifact.
