as a response to the ever-more branded and commercialized nature of ‘high-art’, swiss studio bureau a erects ‘BIG’, a stonehenge-esque venue at the biennale for independent art spaces in geneva aiming to revive the counterculture art scene, available to all for free. forty-eight stacked blue shipping containers recreate the neolithic circular assembly space capable of hosting a variety of social events from concerts to markets to art shows. each container opens up to create spaces for small merchants, storage, exhibition and seating areas, and general supporting program for the venue. the project is a statement to the spread of art and culture in modern society, a revival of more ancient strategies implemented to promote the exchange of ideas. using readily available economical materials and a historically recognizable form, the steel structure brings lifestyle back to the community, allowing its hosted function to determine its aesthetic.
