brussels-based architect olivier dwek has shared images of a completed residence in belgium that features a series of geometrically extruded volumes. toying with the rules of proportion and measure, the architect references how mankind has built pyramids, temples and cathedrals all according to the guidelines of bilateral symmetry. in an attempt to subvert these strict rules, ‘DS house’ seeks to induce more excitement from its asymmetrical and imperfect form.

the façade of this imposing residence reflects the tension between a quest for majesty balanced with a desire for difference and variation’, explains the design team. ‘the solemn construction is composed of various elements, certain of which have no architectonic function but sit alongside one another like autonomous sculptural entities. animated by a series of voids and projections, the façade resonates with nuances ranging from grey to beige, characteristic of the natural stone.

in order to access the property, one must traverse japanese-style stepping stones that seem to float above the water’s surface. behind the home’s oxidised brass door, guests are drawn into the central axis of the residence where a cascade of light provides a visual link between two glazed apertures that open theatrically onto the garden. throughout the scheme, the alternation of materials, textures and reflections offers the home a distinctive visual appearance.
