Aedas groups four structures together to create chengdu’s ‘urban oasis’

a cluster of reflective buildings form the ‘evergrande huazhi plaza’ in the center of chengdu, china. international firm Aedas has designed the vast mixed-use development consisting of four programs: retail, residential, commercial and the st. regis hotel.

the plaza features four programs: office, residential, retail and hotel

architecturally, the plaza draws its influence from the natural landscape of sichuan province in which chengdu is located. deep-rooted references such as the design of evergrande huazhi plaza drew its inspiration from the natural terraced pools of huanglong. the layering of floors gives the highly commercial buildings character and at the same time, balance form and function, which inherently creates an ‘urban’ oasis for the city center.

the one shopping mall’s architectural form, space and materials is based on the natural terraced landscapes and pools of jiuzaigou. this is characterized by the earth-tone granite that has been used, combined with patterned surfaces which translates the rocky element of the natural terrain into the façade. the series of staggering terraces at varying heights to the interior space, creates a fluid form and space, consistent with the overall design of the development.
