EUREKA

EUREKA by Tetsu8 from japan

designer's own words:

Recent days, we often have opportunities to see wearable devices, the
promising items of information appliance. Among those items, I was
interested in “Smart Watch.” Though we find most of the products
presently in the market are watch type of circle or square, is it really
the most adequate design? The device should display information that are
changing all the time depending on the situation and necessity, and the
device adequate to store those information is required to shake itself
free from its geometric design.

“Watch” is the first device of abstract information that human beings
have worn, and it functions at the closest to them. Through the
graduation project, I have pursued the evolved design to wear various
information including the Time. I would like to propose the most
adequate and new device design and displaying way.

I have used the image of a wave breaking and ocean foam rising as a metaphor for the amount of information that we are overwhelmed with. The curved shape that wraps around from inner side of the wrist to the outer side represents the image of waves. Getting away from the mental model of a wrist watch, I have come up with a form that is functional and natural to attach to one\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s body, based on the idea that we are always surrounded by information.

My product conveys the flow of vast “information” that drifts invisibly around us, tailored and matching each users needs. I have expressed the constant wave of information from networks as the shape and movement of a wave that is breaching on the beach with white foam from.

Information received by the user is conveyed by the constantly changing surface display, with icons enlarging and shrinking to most effectively order the information. By connecting the device with smartphones, received information can be quickly accessed on the wrist. Basic operation is accessing information, after which input and response systems are carried out on the smartphone, making for a seamless user experience.

The display is mainly a touch panel, while the solid button at the top acts as start and home button (allowing to return to the home screen at any time.) As the home button is most often used, it is located at the crown of the watch, while the power button is located at the back to prevent mis-functions.

The watch is a bangle-type with an open/close structure for easy attaching and detaching. To avoid damage in everyday use, machine parts are kept to a minimum, and the open/close latch operates by magnet. A proposal for the future would be a customizing feature through 3D printers, etc… where users can express their individuality.
