known for their quirky product titles, douglas & company, a south african creative duo, has given their latest designs names of unconventional new york characters and places. the playful and useful pieces are called ‘professor seagull’ (bench) and ‘mcsorley’s wonderful saloon’ (trolley).

the bench includes a hat and coat stand with timber seat and marble inlay

‘professor seagull’ is a movable bench named after a homeless bohemian that claimed to be the author of the longest book ever written – ‘an oral history of the contemporary world’ (also known as ‘oral history of our time’). in turn, the trolley called ‘mcsorley’s wonderful saloon’, takes its name from one of new york’s oldest bars called ‘mcsorley’s old ale house’.

both pieces of furniture have wheels to ensure that they can be moved around as needed. each one is composed of a black steel angle frame structure that holds the piece of natural stone (marble and granite) and an american white oak inlay, which serves as a horizontal surface — a worktable for the trolley, and a seating area for the bench. the current color palette of grey, green and cotton candy pink celebrates a fun filled summer season in the southern hemisphere, but can be customized to suit a more sober environment.

the unconventional new york characters not only provide apt names, but also set the scene of an outlandish world for oddballs (literary characters and furniture alike) to thrive in.
