rodrigo ohtake organically forms tulio table + vitis chair

rodrigo ohtake scales down his architectural practice into the ‘vitis’ chair and ‘tulio’ table, two sculptural furniture pieces presented during the 2015 MADE — mercado·arte·design in são paulo, curated by waldick jatobá.

derived from the latin world for ‘vine’, ‘vitis’ has been envisioned as a structure that appears like branches of a climbing tree are supporting its seat, twisting upward into the backrest with no trunk to hold it in place. ohtake has designed ‘vitis’ with a handmade approach, with steel tubes interlaced in a way that seems to defy gravity, but with high-end production. each conduit is extruded from a machine with a unique geometry in just 15 seconds. the ‘vitis’ chair comes in a limited edition of 10 signed pieces and measures H125 x W55 x D75 cm.

the brazilian creative has also conceived the ‘tulio’ table to accompany the ‘vitis’ chair. expressing a similar aesthetic, ‘tulio’ hosts a structure of ‘legs’ — a composition of steel rebar that is crudely bent to stabilize the base; and supports a round surface made from weathered concrete, finished with enamel paint.
