photographed by david cardelus, the historical old born market, located in barcelona’s ribera district, has been transformed into a memorial site in remembrance of the war of spanish succession. the project took form when the ruins of buildings destroyed during the conflict were unearthed during preparatory excavation works for a new central library. the former mercat del born was designed by catalan architect josep fontseré in 1871. inaugurated in 1876, the market served as barcelona’s central market for 95 years, closing in 1971. catalonian architects rafael de cáceres and enric sòria painstakingly restored the building to its former glory while converting the structure into the el born centre cultural. the museum was dedicated on the 300th anniversary of the city’s surrender — september 11, 2015.
