against the rural and agronomic backdrop of paddy fields, plant life and stagnant waters, malaysian artist zahir batin brings a fictional cult classic to life. batin’s native surroundings set the scene for his series ‘the intruder’, which sees characters and aircraft from the star wars series introduced to the malaysian countryside.

rather than constructing the entire composition using digital software, batin physically forms each image using people and props. model space ships, miniature figurines and real rural landscapes are photographed in pieces at various scales and times of day before finally pieced together in the computer. a lifelike quality is achieved through the careful balance of light and shadow that equalizes the disparate parts, while details like aircraft headlights and motion trails expand upon the realism of the scene.
