atelier 37.2 forms new horizons for sculpture by the sea in denmark

for the 2015 edition of the sculpture by the sea festival held in aarhus, denmark, paris-based atelier 37.2 has completed ‘new horizon’ at water’s edge. the installation forms an immersive experience for visitors entering within its wooden depths, enveloped within a cavernous volume formed of overlapping planks.

once inside, viewers can peer through two glass windows placed at varying heights that open out to the surrounding landscape. the bottom aperture reveals a rectangular portion of the sea, with passing boats and serene ripples constantly changing the visible image. the upper frame exhibits a small segment of the sky, where viewers can observe birds in flight, slowly passing clouds, and changing colors throughout the day. the opposing vantage points make the horizon line disappear, so that entrants may experience the landscape as two monochromatic compositions reminiscent of rothko paintings.
