schmidt hammer lassen’s revitalized boiler central opens in denmark

constructed in the 1940s, the boiler central, a historic, red brick building in vejle, denmark has recently re-opened. completed by local firm schmidt hammer lassen, the refurbishment project, has seen the 1,200 sqm industrial structure being overhauled to provide space for the new design driven innovation center, hosting offices and studios for 30 creative companies. the prominent heritage building is a visual landmark for innovation and business within the region. by combining innovation, creativity and design, a feature which the practice has added is the corten and glass volumes on the original structure.

the danish firm had also converted the ‘spinning mills’ scheme which sits adjacent to the boiler central. in 2010, the spinning mills opened hosting 50 micro enterprises in the fields of creativity, communication and business development. furthermore, the scheme accommodates a number of cultural institutions and vejle municipality´s innovation department.
