coil kazuteru matumura architects renovates satoduto shop in japan

‘satoduto’ is a café, local market, art gallery, and gathering place. located in nose-cho, a small town roughly an hour north of osaka, japan, the renovation project was completed by coil kazuteru matumura architects. the name itself describes the essence of the design; ‘sato’ meaning countryside and ‘duto’ meaning both wrapped/souvenir. combined, in loosely translated english, it can be understood as souvenirs in the countryside.

inside, the space is arranged flexibly to allow for multiple functions such as galleries, retail shops, café overflow seating, and workshops. the kitchen rests in its own little cabin-like form, and helps visually separate the otherwise expansive space. four gardens and a field surround the structure, so the plan encourages maximum enjoyment during all four seasons. in the colder months, guests and customers can gaze outside while remaining cozy by the wood fireplace. during the summer months, windows can be open, and people can head outside to the adjoined open-terrace.
merchandise and fireplace
builders salvaged cupboards and storage boxes from the original, most at least a century old, and they give the updated structure a renewed sense of value and heritage. the local community was involved by providing such things as counter tops, stained-glass pieces, mirrors, picture frames, and other amenities like ceramic wares and paintings. aside great local food and coffee, ‘satoduto’ offers many experiences that connect locals and foreigners alike to the everyday peculiarities of life in nose-cho.
