gijs bakker first introduced his ‘holes’ project in 1989 with his ‘chairs with holes’ which he conceived for droog — the dutch design company he co-founded with renny ramakers. today, he revisits this earlier exploration with ‘console with holes’ (2015), and ‘room divider (2015). the body of work presents chairs, tables and other furniture, with deliberate arrangements of differently sized holes across their surfaces. this graphed out pattern offers a visually light appearance, which plays with our perception of the weight and physicality of the objects at hand. the ‘holes’ series was developed in close collaboration with the fiction factory.

bakker’s updated ‘holes’ collection is on show as part of the designer’s retrospective at atelier courbet in new york until june 15th.
