archilede special provides much needed update to street lamp design

street lamps are the oft forgotten fixtures of the urban landscape. crucial to night time navigation, the feeling of safety, and many others; the objects are seemingly only noticed when not properly functioning. as lighting technologies quickly progress in every context from domestic table lamps to innovative automotive headlights — it’s only natural that the roadside beacons follow suit. the ‘archilede special’ was designed by makio hasuike & co in a collaborative effort along with neri s.p.a. and enel sole.

the fixtures are made of cast aluminum with a wide emission surface and perimeter reflectors. behind a plate of 4mm thick, tempered glass, sits the latest generation of cree XP-G2 LEDs. coupled with a ceramic base for high-thermal conductivity and electric insulation, the lights are long lasting and ultra-efficient. 

the light can be pole or wall-mounted 

due to an integrated heat dissipation system, the luminaire can be safely used at temperatures upwards of 50°C. an internal driver — the neri constant lumen — can calibrate the current supplied to individual LEDs to ensure the constant lighting throughout the life of the product. in addition, a stand-alone control is able to automatically adjust the flux at one or more levels to adjust for different lighting situations throughout the seasons. ‘archilede special’ is suitable for the top of poles, or side-mounting, and is compliant with the most restrictive laws on light pollution.
