to celebrate the recently completed torsby finnskog center (see designboom’s coverage here), bornstein lyckefors architects has created an exhibition within the space. the museum, located in the forest and cultural landscape of sweden, is dedicated to the construction techniques, history, traditions and folklore of the finnish people who settled in the area in the 1600s.

the floor is a printed carpet visualizing freshly burned ground

the design is an abstraction of the slash-and-burn agricultural technique utilized by the settlers. on the floor, a printed carpet depicts charred, burnt ground typical of the practice which involves controlled-burning of clear-cut areas. the walls of the room are covered with mirrors and laser-cut colored strips that create an infinity effect, making the exhibit space appear much larger than it is in reality. large glass stands are mounted on spring green steel racks with diagonal bracings to visualize a forest scene.

bornstein lyckefors’ eye-catching exhibition recently earned the studio the 2016 WAN award for adaptive reuse.
