tel aviv based architect roy david was given an unusual challenge in a recent interior project. the space would be shared simultaneously by two companies, jelly button games and hamutzim studio. the workspace needed to allow each of the companies a level of functional privacy, but in a way that would still encourage the unity and quick communication between multi-person teams.

the office is located on shoken street, a district in the south of the city that’s well known for it’s low-fi industrial style of architecture. its total area is 700m2, with 3.5m high ceilings. the concept for the space was to create a three segment plan that encompasses various public, semi-public, and private areas. that way, workers can work in peace when need be, but coworkers to bounce ideas off of are never far from hand. spacial organization is circular, represented as a ripple effect.

all public facilities are located directly in the center. as the ripple fades towards the extremities of the room semi-private, then entirely private workplaces and nooks can be found. the periphery includes various functions such as conference rooms, a gaming room, and private desks. the general area in its entirety is split in two via a small, three-step staircase. this separates the two studios physically, but still allows free visual communication. to further the idea of transparency, see-through, free standing walls were incorporated

on entrance, visitors are greeted by white washed walls and ceiling, complimented by a raw concrete floor. a seemingly barren palette; things are quickly brightened up through an eclectic mix of custom-made wooden furniture, décor elements, and lighting fixtures. being a developers’ studio, david needed to find a way to aesthetically deal with a mass amount of electronics. large iron pipes do the majority of the work, simultaneously protecting and hiding vast amounts of power cords and cables as they move from desk to ceiling.

general space and local street artist support column work

existing support columns were selected to be the crowning feature of the office. local street artists, most of whom operate studios in the near vicinity, were given free reign over the numerous blank canvases. the workplace’s library is furnished with multiple seating places, an ancient persian rug, huge iron and oak book shelf, and a tinted window that looks into a small meeting area. kitchen and dining areas are accented with industrial pipe — as repetition of the style — and also to support shelving in the rooms. a large, communal dining table is situated in the center of the room, encouraging interaction and allowing the dialogue to move from space to space
