jaime hayon gas injection moulds milà plastic chair for magis

spanish designer jaime hayon has collaborated with magis on his first product rendered in plastic. presented at the 2015 salone del mobile, the ‘milà’ chair employs the italian furniture manufacturer’s gas injection-moulded pioneering production techniques. the seat is rich and expressive, visibly connected in form and aesthetic to the catalan modernist movement, from which it draws its formal influences. sculptural arms and backrest undulate in thickness, creating organic, irregular apertures and geometries, rather than strictly-controlled surfaces and shapes.

deviating from hayon’s usual mediums and methodologies, the design of ‘milà’ was ‘a challenge for me, as someone who normally uses materials with thousands of years of heritage such as wood, metal, and ceramic, to create my first product in plastic,’ he describes, ‘and I am happy with it.’

the stacking chair with arms is air-moulded, and made from polypropylene with glass fibre added. created by jaime hayon for magis in two different versions, suitable for either indoor or outdoor use, ‘milà’ is available is six matte colors: red, dark green, yellow, beige, white and black.
