tucked between the foot of a mountain range and the edge of the han river in yangpyeong moonhori sits a modest home designed by korean studio 100 A. the area is relatively undeveloped with a site lost amidst barriers of thick foliage and a constantly changing topography surrounded in fading layers of mountaintops, an almost nondescript scene that led to the design of a stark white home that serves as a blank canvas upon which its future residents can mark their own meaning of place and time. the house is developed as two joined forms: a regular cube and an extruded profile of the archetypal ‘house’. painted brick makes up the construction of the outer shell with sections of rhythmic protrusions projecting racking shadows along the wall’s surface, and sections of subtraction as a semi-translucent wall filtering light in the entrance vestibule. the interior is defined by its polished concrete floors and white walls. controlled sections of herringbone flooring denote various rooms, while dark stained plywood panels wrap the ceiling and end wall of the extruded volume containing the kitchen and entry area and forming one of the three major materials found throughout the home.
