food production has historically occurred in areas of low real-estate interest, far from densely populated settlements or cities. ‘farm-x’, by zurich’s conceptual devices, is a modular vertical farm concept that shifts the historical dichotomy between food production and consumption. the facility is able to grow up to five tons of fresh food per day in its 1000m² area using specific hydroponic farming techniques and full climate control.

the idea of ‘farm-x’ is that the model can be applied and happen anywhere

the building is conceived not just as a means of nutritional sustenance, but also urban revitalization. ‘farm-x’ uses abandoned warehouse plots, widely present in U.S. cities. it provides employment, energy exchange, and a service vital to life–food. the structure generates power by processing green-waste, creating a tight dynamic between people, food, and waste within the urban environment.

‘farm-x’s’ optimal size corresponds to a medium sized urban block (32m x 32m) at four-stories height. the building typology can be easily integrated into any modern city fabric and play an active role in local community development. the form is standardized in construction and dismountable in order to optimize cost effectiveness and replicability. thanks to its flexible layout, after a neighborhood or area has been aided, the farm can be moved elsewhere. or, it can be adapted to take on another function by simply removing the lightweight hydroponic systems. currently, a farm-x is near completion in richmond, california.
