‘love project’ is a study of design, science, and technology that captures personal emotions and transforms them into everyday objects, sculptures, and art pieces. the venture was led by guto requena in collaboration with D3. the work suggests a future in which unique products will bear personal histories in ways that encourage long life cycles, inherently combining meaning with encouraged sustainability. the project resulted in a performance and installation consisting of 50 3D printed mandalas created from the experiences of são paulo, brazil participants. 

each mandala is unique to the emotions of its creator

to create the works, sensors are applied to participants which read subtle reactions while they narrate the defining love stories of their lives. as they speak, data such as heart rate, neural activity, and voice frequencies relay to a specially developed software. using environmental computational processing, different inputs–from the subject–are translated into a single computed language allowing real-time visualization of their emotional states.

collected data is sent to ‘grasshopper’, a parametric software that models three-dimensional objects. after the data translates, final pieces–in the form of mandalas–are visualized on the computer and sent to a 3D printer. the prints can be made in ABS plastic, polyamide, glass, ceramic, or metal. each product is unique to its creator, and contains their most intimate moments. ‘love project’ investigates new possibilities arising within the digital era and questions the logic of creation, production, and sales.
