fabric is the focus in ‘beau fixe’, inga sempé‘s latest development for ligne roset. working with the guiding principle of bringing forth poetic design solutions for everyday life, the french designer developed a material specifically for upholstering the seating collection that brings forth structural dimension, and subtle graphic dynamism.

‘beau fixe’ is defined by its metal framework that is visible to the eye, and which sandwiches its cushions in place
 

‘to contrast with the calmness of the ‘beau fixe’ collection, I wanted to associate a fabric which would bring liveliness and meticulousness. responding to seating composed of straight lines linked by curves in drops or arcs, the motif is a set of intercalated dots and dashes, sometimes linked, in an irregular rhythm. from a distance, one believes that it is a weave of thick threads, like a tweed, even though it is simply printed onto cloth. it is not at all figurative, but one could see morse code or braille in it, or even stylized representations of grains on a stalk or trees on a roadway. the detail in the motif enables it to be printed in bright colours which still remain understated.’ – inga sempé

the means of clipping the cushions between the metal supports gives the seating its shape

the generous settee, armchair and foot stool are further defined by a metal framework. rather than hide this structural element that is normally wrapped beneath the upholstery, sempé has designed ‘beau fixe’ in such a way that the supporting components are visible to the eye, using them to sandwich the cushions in place, and give them their shape.
