danish practices COBE, NORD architects, landscape architects PK3 and grontmij have collaborated to produce ‘prinsessegade kindergarten and youth club’ a winning competition proposal for a daycare center in the borough of christianshavn in copenhagen, denmark. the urban population levels are expected to rise by 90,000 individuals by the year 2025, with approximately 33,000 between the ages of 18 and 29 years of age and 22,000 below 18. in need of facilities for this influx, a triangular plot wedged between a block structure of prinsessegade and diverse christiana free town will host 618 children and young teens, marking this the largest center of its kind in the country.
the priority was to maintain a sense of scale, and keeping the focus on the individual. acclimating to all different types of personalities with clusters of small and diverse buildings grouped around two central streets that connect to the city’s larger network. dubbed ‘the kid’s city’, its planning will contain neighborhoods, different public squares and parks. other amenities include a stadium and batting cage as well as essentials of a fire station, housing, restaurant and city hall. outdoor activities become integral and interior spaces make the active, quiet and outgoing children feel at home with areas for music, play, baking and calm interaction.
