vector architects conceive vanke centre as an ocean-viewing platform

in 2012, chinese studio vector architects was commissioned by the vanke group to design a new office structure and exhibition center in a seashore park in bayuquan, china. the site is very flat with great ocean views to north, however a certain height would have to be reached in order to enjoy it. these factors led to two distinct concepts that drove the design to its final manifestation: the relationship on a larger scale between structure and site, and the relationship on a smaller scale between public and private.

the building contains offices, a 3rd-story restaurant serving the general public as well as employees, and an exhibition space on the top floor. a gentle ramp leads up to the structure where the exterior circulation makes a defined void in the aluminum-clad mass. one staircase leads up to the restaurant and exhibition platform that is oriented towards the sea.

this is a public space intended for the community to enjoy at any time to host events or simply relax. the east facade of exhibition area is marked by large round perforations that constantly filter light onto the platform. going back to the entrance, a separate path of circulation leads to the private offices and admin functions, effectively keeping the two realms separate with the possibility to combine at the restaurant and platform.
