designboom visited the ingo maurer showroom in munich where an installation of moritz waldemeyer‘s ‘my new flame’ lanternis on view during munich creative business week.

here, the luminescent atmosphere from the ancient past – the simple yet complex candle flame – is recreated. each light is comprised of a double-sided rectangular circuit board display, housing 128 small LEDs (per side) on its upper end, programmed to express warm color temperatures in order to render the effect of torches flickering in the wind, offering a realistic glow of burning candles. from a short distance, the lamps are indistinguishable from the real thing, thanks to this perfect tonal matching, and it is only upon closer inspection that the low resolution charm of the digital panels are revealed.
