it has been decided that miami’s institute of contemporary art, (ICA miami), will build a permanent home for the museum as part of the city’s design district. designed by spanish firm aranguren + gallegos arquitectos, the 37,500 square foot design will be constructed on land donated by miami design district associates, and is being entirely funded by irma and norman braman. the announcement coincides with this year’s edition of design miami/, a forum for design that brings together the world’s collectors, gallerists, designers and curators.

while the permanent home is being constructed, ICA miami will remain in the landmark moore building, which officially opens on tuesday, december 2, 2014, with two major exhibitions showcasing the work of pedro reyes and andra ursuta. the building enables the institution to expand its reach of programs with over 20,000 square feet of exhibition space. final designs for the museum will be released in early 2015, with a projected completion date scheduled for december 2016.

miami is among the most impassioned and engaged cultural communities in the world. we are thrilled to be able to realize the design and construction of ICA miami’s new home without the need for any public funding’, explained irma braman, co-chair of ICA miami‘s board of trustees. ‘we are especially thankful to craig robins and miami design district associates for enabling us to remain permanently in the design district. to create our new home we have selected aranguren + gallegos, a firm noted for designs that respond to, enliven, and enrich dense urban environments.
