copenhagen business school (CBS) is the second largest institute of its kind in europe with 20,000 students, close to the very heart of the metropolis. in cooperation with the community of frederiksberg, CBS has launched a bold vision to transform the existing infrastructure into one of the world’s best city campuses. at the core of the project is the intertwining of urban and student life, and the C.F. møller, transform, and moe master plan puts forth a holistic model for how to interweave functions, buildings, and pathways on the one hand, with teaching, research, and study environments on the other.

the long and narrow site spans between two stops of the metro line and is run through by the ‘rambla’, a central pedestrian path. by creating four new urban amenities along the walkway, ranging from the classical plaza around the transportation hubs to an informal, recreational park at the center of the campus, and densifying with new extroverted buildings, the organization boosts cohesion between the facility and society.

running parallel, the southern cycle super highway and a northern bicycle route connect the campus to the city’s network of paths and ensure a safe and efficient flow through the area. the structures are designed to cover a small portion of land to allow as much space as possible for outdoor activities. clusters of compact, multi-functional architecture with green roofs create versatile zones and are flexibly appointed so that their interiors can be changed to the needs of their occupants.

the project has a strong focus on sustainability and uses green building council denmark criteria as a tool to meet the school’s environmental and financial objectives. these tasks for social interaction are equally ambitious: clearly defined meeting places, vegetative elements, and the merging of traffic lines unite frederiksberg and the CBS campus to attract a wide variety of user groups.
