‘favela’ by andrew siu + jeffrey liu

concieved by vancouver-based designers andrew siu and jeffrey liu, the project was spawned from a birdhouse design exhibit put on by the vancouver design bureau collective. looking into how wildlife adapts into urban spaces, the idea of favela was influenced by haas & hahn, two artists reframing the notorious slums of brazil into vibrant, uplifting communities through painted murals.

while taking the same approach in showcasing the idea of ‘urbanized wildlife’, it reintroduces color and wildlife back into urban spaces through temporary graffiti. earth-magnets are implemented as a non-traditional way of securing the birdhouses onto industrialized surfaces. ‘favela’ includes a negative extrusion with a concealed opening and removable top inhibiting predators from entering the nest.
