japanese architecture practice makoto yamaguchi design has transformed a nondescript three-storey structure in downtown tokyo into a contemporary office environment. in converting the existing building – a former noodle factory – the design team sought to introduce elements of greenery and wood grain, referencing the theme of ‘bosco’ – the italian word for forest.

externally, the entire scheme is wrapped with a metal mesh that encourages ivy and other vine plants to clad the industrial structure with a natural, green coating. this motif extends internally, inviting employees and visitors inside. the previously existing ceiling has been removed, while the minimal use of partition walls ensures a feeling of expansive continuity. the floor slab has also been punctured in the center to account for a transparent staircase that introduces a more free means of circulation.

stacked and chopped fire-logs are used throughout the interiors, aligned with glazed partitions that allow the incongruent surfaces to be read as a singular collage. in contrast, on the large wall of the meeting room the materials take on a different textured character creating a play of volume and light.
