‘the lines are never certain, never knowing where the next will lead to. never knowing, but continuing to draw. and for this very reason, there is always an opportunity for something new. from the infinite dialogues of the brain, eyes, hand, paper, and space, new architecture is born.’
-architect sou fujimoto
content a fascimile of japanese architect sou fujimoto’s actual sketchbook, this volume provides an unabridged, unedited intimate view into his mind, hand, and thought process. small page numbers have been added for ease of browsing, with a few pages inserted at the end in which the author describes his relationship to sketching as a ‘dialogue with himself,’ and highlights some of his influences. there is also an index of every page and the related project. this identical replica is a map into the process of creation.
this week designboom sat down with sou fujimoto to discuss the book and its importance amongst the architectural community.
the release of sou fujimoto’s sketchbook took place during a joint book signing with wang shu’s ‘imagining the house’, both for lars müller publishers, during the 2012 venice architecture biennale within the swiss pavilion which designboom covered here.
see designboom’s review of ‘imagining the house’ here.
is it for me? this book is made for the architect, with sketches of ideas, concepts, evolutions and renderings without any third-party narrative or explanation. some vested interest in hand drawing and design principles are a must in this self guided tour of fujimoto’s mind, to fully appreciate the invaluable content.
