This Japanese tea room is a device designed to enhance the five senses. The simple and minimalist construct allows for the guest to escape from everyday life and re-focus their attention to the five senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste while experiencing the ancient tradition of Japanese tea ceremony.
Simplicity is the key to enhancing the five senses. Hence, this tea room was designed as an embodiment of the simplistic beauty of Japanese tea ceremony. By limiting the amount of information and activity within this enclosed space, the guest can enhance the five senses that they posses yet selectively use in everyday life.
The design of this device was aimed at inviting guests with curiosity to the inside of this oval-shaped chamber. The bubbling sound of boiling water, the subtle smell of tea leaves in chemical reaction, the texture of the tea cup in your hands, and finally the simple yet organic taste of tea simmering through your body; this act of Japanese tea ceremony, combined with the simple and minimalist construct, will provide an environment that enables one to directly feel their five senses.
The title ‘Hoan’ has two meanings. First, the word ‘ho-an’ is a commonly used onomatopoeia in Japanese which describes a soft and warm object/feeling. Second, the shape of mouth when pronouncing ‘ho’ resembles the two circular holes found on top and behind, while the word ’an’ traditionally means ‘tea room’ in Japanese. The title ‘Hoan’ is meant to greet its guests with a warm and welcoming feeling, while it is also manifested in its function and shape.
