architecture office naturehumaine has completed an addition to and renovation of a small 1920’s house, known as the ‘dulwich residence’, in the suburbs of montreal, canada. the extension references its host through its brick exterior treatment, which has been darkened to indicate its difference. on the upper level, an angular steel-clad volume projects from the dwelling’s back side with a pronounced window facing toward the garden.

the new and existing building volumes are spatially interconnected, and feature three double height areas throughout. the composition includes a glass volume sandwiched between the two masses on the front side, which contains the house’s staircase. a wood outdoor patio infills the backside corner of the residence, accessed from the dining and living rooms.
