scale and proportion play large roles in architectural discourse. during the design process, the characteristics must be considered in relation to each other, the function of the building, and the surrounding context. following this common mode of thinking, antionio lanzillo & partners have scaled down national monuments to create a series of pet houses.

‘with this project, the kennels for animals finally become chic and fashionable and we wanted to explore the issue of scale and the size of an object which is always relative to a point of view,’ says lanzillo. in doing so, the follies reinterpret history with the formal manipulations that have made jørn utzon’s ‘sydney opera house’ and frank gehry‘s ‘guggenheim museum in bilbao’ famous. each shelter is constructed of polyethylene and manufactured with rotational molding technology. this process allows for two sizes that can adapt to any dog or cat. after printing, the volumes must be cut in front to provide a main entry into the comfortable environments. in addition to the monochromatic versions, through the technique of using two mixtures at different steps during development, multi-color models are available with contrasting interior and exterior hues.
