amazon joins the ranks of mobile payment systems such as the ‘paypal here‘ and ‘square reader‘, by introducing their own version ‘local register‘. developed for small businesses, the mobile app and secure card reader provides merchants with the tools to accept payments and other transactions via credit and debit cards.

to push ‘local register’ onto the market, and to set it apart from its established competitors, amazon is offering a low, flat rate with no hidden fees for its users – meaning there are no administrative charges, no fees for chargebacks or for accepting international credit cards; and where paypal and square bill approximately 2.7% and 2.75% respectively for each card swiped transaction, amazon’s fee is currently only 1.75% – until january 1st, 2016, at which point it will rise to 2.5%. additionally, ‘local register’ costs $10 USD, but amazon promises to credit your first $10 USD in processing fees thus offsetting the cost of the tool itself.

through its accompanying app, ‘local register’ provides its clients with detailed reports about their businesses, updated every 30 minutes, giving quick overviews of their sales, as well as giving them the ability to easily compare their selling patterns with previous ones; showing at-a-glance, whether not they are increasing or decreasing. other information and insights it include tracking when businesses are serving the most customers, helping you staff appropriately; as well as graphing your top-selling items and categories.

adding a bank account to your ‘local register’ is also seamless, and allows you to receive payments that you collect easily, deposited within the next business day. in return, those monetary resources are available almost instantly on amazon’s own e-commerce gateway.  you can also schedule deposits to automatically — supporting one-time, daily or weekly — transfer funds to your bank account, with no associated fees.
