sandpaper is typically used for construction to remove small amounts of material from surfaces, making them smooth and enhancing their appearance. during the production process, they can be folded, manipulated, pressed down, and maneuvered to create as much friction as possible until the abrasive texture that decorates their functional side is no longer valuable. as opposed to using this tool to provide the finishing touches to crafts, avi fedida has fully embedded the material into the stool, table, and shelf designs of his furniture series ‘grit’.

the driving force of the collection comes from the craftsman’s love of objects that constantly develop a unique character of their own with the effect of time and wear. ‘designing my furnitures, I decided to use sandpaper as the main component through intervening in the process of attrition, where the sandpaper practically becomes a kind of canvas,’ said fedidas. in order to accomplish this vision, the project introduces innovation in terms of fine ingredients and carpentry techniques by grinding a rich variety of wood onto the paper as it rotates around a machine. once the surface is adorned with a pattern of spirals, it is integrated into the white oak constructions stabilized by different types of joints.
