Oakley Disrupt - Parametric Ski Design by Sam & Will from new zealand

As Industrial Designers and skiers we appreciate freedom of expression within design and on the mountain. Growing tired of our inability to truly find the perfect ski, hindering our mountain experience, we set out to solve the problem.

We wanted to challenge the current trend based market, opposing superficial or minor changes in profile and graphic year to year. We aim to create an honest product which fully exposes its design and construction releasing the rider from the prerequisites of trend and fashion.

This project utilizes parametric CAD technology to create a system which allows the customer to modify their ski design to cater to their riding style and terrain. By first selecting 1 of 3 preset profile styles, riders can use intuitive sliders to modify parameters such as length, side cut, binding position and flex pattern. This system is accessed through Oakley's international website.

Once selections have been finalized by the customer, data is sent from the CAD system to the CNC manufacturing facility where the core is shaped and external materials are assembled including carbon fibre, nylon top sheet, base materials and titanium.

The materials and manufacturing methods used creates a unique aesthetic inspired by the raw component properties and natural formations. The cell like structure reveals the true personality of the ski, unique to each rider, not unlike the fingerprint.

The resulting product offers a tailored experience unparalleled by any other ski available.
