Retractable arm system Design by Eelco from netherlands
designer's own words:
In my designs I always look for existing objects that I can improve: to expand it's purpose.
according the competition brief the format was free I couldn't let go the idea to extend the design of glasses. There must be more. There is plenty room for more features.
When I started sketching a lot of idea's were born, surprised bij what was possible and, more important, is never seen before (as far as I know...). I couldn't elaborate my design much further, because I discovered the existence this competition on the 10 of july, but was determine to give it a shot!
To be honoust, It's a little scary to release my idea into the 'open' media, affraid that other might use it in the future without veryfiying me.
Many of these designs are floating in my head... Sometimes I can't sleep of it!
On my current glasses I have bayonet arms for helmets/hood/caps/barets. In that purpose it's perfect but when I'm working lower on the groung or looking down all the time (sketching, woodworking, reading etc.) they start gliding of my nose.
So I like to wear my glasses on every location, on every activity. When on a relaxed hike to use them 'normal', when wall-climbing with the straps extended or arms bended. A more flexible use.
The idea is an internal strap hidden in both arms of several Oakley models. Preferly elastic round or oval strap to connect on the back of the head with connectors: the end of both arms. All colors and materials are possible. The disadvantage of my design is that you can only use this system on models with thicker arms. The glasses can be used for several activity's (passive and active) that makes the choice of buying oakley a commercial benefit: costumers don't have to buy glasses and straps separately but they are now together! Also bended arms is an option, although I prefer integrated straps.
The integrated straps can also be used on small camera's, smartphones etc.
With honor having the chance to design my vision for Oakley...
