for his project ‘the art of diving,’ kristian terziev has designed a center located in the bulgarian coastal city of tsarevo near arapia. the aim of this concept is to consider the theme of water sports and public facilities in close proximity to the ocean. looking at the problem through the eyes of a person with respect to the environment, terziev attempts to fulfill the need to remain part of the natural world that surrounds us.

the driving idea is that the whole interior should act as a work of art. thus, the form is designed to draw visitors into a cavernous-like space where they can escape to forget about their daily pursuits. in order to achieve this desired effect, a dynamic parametric structure flows throughout the entire complex to provide a sense of continuity throughout the functions of the diving center.

dramatic moments within the building, where its waffled surfaces create grand gestures of concavity and convexity, implement natural and artificial systems to alternate sharp and soft shadows. light wells expressed on the exterior through circular glazing are developed in complement to the undulation of the architecture and correspond to the needs of specific programs. these features decorate wide handicap accessible corridors of vivid ultramarine and bright white while hiding storage closets and private programs within the walls. notification of their existence is only distinguished through visual wayfinding devices with icons placed on the floor, helping visitors mentally prepare for the function of the next room.

as a form of gesamtkunstwerk, meaning ‘total work of art’ in german, terziev has also designed several products that are meant to assist the routine activities of the facility. providing areas for sitting, rounded chairs mimic the gridded walls. their aesthetic is related to marine life, from the body with a transparent or translucent tissue. for the organization of scuba diving suits, special hangers of two magnetic components help the apparel dry and the allow easy access.
