the new aluminium element in juxtaposition with the old stairs

the immobility of the structure within a 1920’s building versus a daily circulation of students drove dalit lilienthal to his installation called ‘static movement.’ the idea was to create an experience against the stillness of the architecture where awareness is directed towards a wall in motion while entering and exiting the 6B studio design school in the center of tel aviv, israel.

led lighting was carefully positioned between the two layers 

during the creative process, lilienthal was notified that interior elements, such as the windows and railings, were not allowed to be changed in their size or material. in reaction to these stipulations, a fresh coat of dark grey paint has been brushed onto the decorated railing and the handrail itself has been sanded to its original wooden material. the renovation focused on the long, high entrance wall leading to the first floor where the secretariat and study halls are situated, an area students constantly pass through during study hours.

to achieve the concept of ‘static movement,’ aluminum strips were individually sliced using a laser cutting machine. the staircase wall consists of two 50-strip layers. by superimposing one layer over the other and offsetting their angles by several degrees, a moiré effect has been created where there is a flowing illusion of rippling movement. this leads visitors to another set of bands used for the corridor, where wooden boxes within the aluminum have become a useful info stand where students can read various brochures and publications.
