metris montages shifting spaces in eisenstein’s story-board summerhouse

‘eisenstein’s story-board summerhouse’ by metris uses the video editing style of the montage pioneered by russian director sergei eisenstein to form a relationship with the surrounding context. by applying the technique towards the white-washed structure, the architects are able to convey the spaces as a collective series of images in juxtaposition with the nearby sloping cliff. in response, the form twists and turns, dancing along a main axis, guidings the user’s eye as it moves between planes, floors, and ceilings, like a camera shifting towards views of the basin’s flowing water and the waves of the calm sea.

the building is not meant to be perceived as a whole, but as a sequence of movements that constitute the basic principle of visual dramaturgy. every frame of this sequence provides an element that finds its answer in the next scene. eventually, the experience of the house produces a whole scenario choreographed by the user, similar to the way a filmmaker choreographs a movie. in contrast to the usual static or linear views of a building, the user is simultaneously a spectator and participant in the kaleidoscopic spectacle of his house.
