domaine de boisbuchet is situated on a 15th century estate in the country’s southwest region between poitou-charentes and limousin. boisbuchet is a venue for creative experimentation, an initiative established twenty-two years ago by alexander von vegesack, founder of the vitra design museum. for the past 16 years – each summer over the course of four months – participants have arrived from around the world to engage in relevantly themed workshops led by selected internationally established artists, designers and architects including werner aisslinger, shigeru ban, nacho carbonell, matali crasset, konstantin grcic, jaime hayon, sou fujimoto, kengo kuma, ingo mauer, max lamb, joep van lieshout and simon velez to name a few.

in cooperation with vitra design museum and the centre georges pompidou, CIRECA has been putting on an international summer academy at domaine de boisbuchet since 1996. the international summer workshops are offered from june through mid-september, exploring topics in architecture, product design, textile design, interior design, exhibition design, performance design, sound design, design and entrepreneurship, jewelry, fashion design, writing and criticism, food design, packaging, industrial design, furniture design, glass and porcelain design and art direction.

once again in 2014, with ‘the natural and the artificial’ as a theme, the courses are led by renowned designers, architects and artists who live and work together with the participants for a length of five to ten days. if you are a creative seeking to broaden your competences and find inspiration, then the boisbuchet workshops are designed for you! explore the programme below to find the subject and tutor in which you are interested:

boisbuchet has chosen the natural and the artificial as a general theme for the summer workshops 2014. investigation into the contrasts and transitions between these qualities is on the agenda of a large variety of seminars. they range from cooking a three star ‘survival’ menu from wild grown ingredients (with food designer katja gruijters) to the installation of an ‘internet of trees’ that implements massimo banzi’s arduino technology.

for the first time, boisbuchet’s international choice of tutors also covers two african designers, cheick diallo from mali and hamed ouattara from burkina faso. they both have developed authentic styles that mix simple techniques with modern and contemporary shapes and integrate their traditional appreciation for colour. french creativity is nevertheless very well represented with antoine + manuel as graphic designers, elise fouin with a workshop on wool and elise van mourik and laure jaffuel from parking club conducting a workshop with jerszy seymour.

as usual, several tutors have already given workshops at boisbuchet in previous years. such creatives include scenographers of groenlandbasel, textile designer cristian zuzunaga, the craft-driven celebrity nacho carbonel, experimentation freaks mischer’traxler, and peter marigold now switching from wood to plastic. also, the corning museum of glass will host a session with their spectacular mobile furnace, using boisbuchet’s korean kiln in cooperation with max lamb as well as sigga heimis, who invited ikea to engage in her 13th boisbuchet workshop.
